How To Achieve Desired Grip Size

What’s Your Grip Size?

Grips are often over looked, but can have a profound impact on performance. There are only 3 golf club components: head, shaft & grip. In order to achieve desired grip size the following information must be taken into account:

• Grip Core Size & Shaft Butt Diameter
• Grip Material Volume

When grip core size & shaft butt diameter match a standard grip size of .900″ will result for men. A standard grip size for women is .850″. To achieve grip sizes that are larger (Oversize) or smaller (Undersize) than standard .900″ a different core size can be used over the shaft butt size. However, the grip material volume must first be determined. A large majority of grips produce by manufacturers are .600 (M60), but other sizes do exist. For example, a M58 (R) grip has slightly more material than a .600 (M60) and a M62 (R) has slightly less. The following example describes grip volume (GV):

When you use these grips with a .600″ shaft butt diameter the following results occur:

.600″ Shaft Butt Diameter + .320″ M58 (R) Grip Volume =
.920″ Very close to +1/64″ Oversize (.915″) Grip

OR

.600″ Shaft Butt Diameter + .280″ M62 (R) Grip Volume =
.880″ Very close to -1/64″ Undersize (.885″) Grip

Taking grip core size, shaft butt diameter & grip material volume into account can obviously have an impact on the resulting grip size, but it can also produce noticeable results in ball flight. When you are fitting a player to a grip it would be wise to have the player hit several shots with varying grip sizes in order to see which produces the best results.
